Artist Statement

At age of eight, I had my first contact with oil painting through a simple and ordinary school task. The activity was so significant for me that after that school task, I decided to paint a portrait of my mother by oil on canvas without any painting skills. Regardless of the outcome primary portrait, that experience was so remarkable for me that the meaning of that moment is not comparable with any other feeling I had experienced in my life up to then. It was unforgettable.

I began my artistic career after I finished my post-baccalaureate program in arts. At that moment, I started developing artistic pieces in my studio, in São Caetano do Sul, Brazil. I started approaching art by developing figurative and illustrative images. However, after a great introspection period, I began producing images that did not have reference to any recognizable form. I consider myself an abstract expressionist painter. Through my paintings, I have been attempting to register expressions of the reaction of the body’s movements based on the stimulus generated by the six primary human emotions: happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise, and disgust.

I produce paintings and drawings using acrylic on canvas, and gouache on paper. In the same way that humans are antagonistic in their attitudes, my work shows contrasting visual presentations. My painting process generates not only highly strong movements and actions but also subtle and rhythmic gestures, sometimes composed by moments of inertia. The results of this way of expression are colorful images with a high profusion of light and visual movements.

By emphasizing empathy with the viewer, my work represents static moments of emotions, inducing the observers into a world of sensations to reinforce their existence as humans. My paintings stimulate different ways which people recognize themselves through their feelings. In addition, my art production indicates a deconstruction of the stereotyped visual representation of the sensations. By questioning the consciousness of emotions, and consequently the perception of awareness, my work has been developed based on the contextualizing of what is intrinsic, avoiding the shallowness of life.
